As you can imagine, northern and southern views of slavery were very different. Most southerners chose to ignore the cruelties of the institution, and instead tried to paint a different picture to combat the abolitionists and their propaganda. One such author was Caroline Lee Hentz. She attempted to paint the picture of contented slaves who were well treated and happy on their plantations.
