To have a deeper understanding of the attitudes of Mark Twain toward the Civil War, and how he perceived things, we'll be taking a small step away from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and looking at another short story written by Mark Twain called "The War Prayer."
Unlike The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, "The War Prayer" takes place during the Civil War, and was written towards the end of Twain's life. This piece has a much more cynical tone to it than The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn which is much more light-hearted. To understand the context of "The War Prayer" first read the article from History that tells about the main events in the Civil War. Write two questions about these events. Once you're finished with that, read "The War Prayer" and write an additional two study or discussion questions about that.
