Every time we meet on a Monday, students will have the opportunity to discuss issues that come up around us. These issues will rarely be political, but will be current events happening in our world today. The reason: students need to be able to think critically about their world, students need to be able to formulate opinions and come up with valid reasons why. This will help them with argumentative writing later. Sometimes we will read articles as a class, and other times we will watch short video clips. Common Core Rationale:
9-10 Reading Informational Standard 2Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
11-12 Reading Informational Standard 2: Determine two or more central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to provide a complex analysis; provide an objective summary of the text.
If students have an issue they want to discuss, they need to submit a video or article to Mrs. Mosdell for approval.
